“Tatak” means mark or stamp.
“Kanto” means street corner.
Tatak Kanto was founded by husband and wife John and Mary Jo De Leon, who were driven by a shared passion for Filipino culture, food, and community. What began as a vision to celebrate their heritage has grown into a platform that brings people together through meaningful experiences rooted in tradition.
John is a U.S. Army Veteran and a former New Jersey State Trooper. He served nine years as an infantryman, including a deployment to Djibouti, Africa, in 2019. Following his military service, he dedicated four years to the New Jersey State Police before transitioning into entrepreneurship, where he continues to focus on community-driven initiatives.
Mary Jo studied Culinary and Pastry Arts in the Philippines and later gained professional experience as a line chef in Massachusetts, where she refined her skills and developed a deep love for sharing Filipino cuisine.
Raised in Pampanga—widely recognized as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines, John and Mary Jo were immersed in a culture where food is an expression of love, tradition, and celebration. From vibrant family gatherings and town fiestas to everyday meals, they learned that every dish tells a story.
Today, they are also the founders of Kanto Filipino BBQ, a food truck that brings authentic Filipino flavors and cherished family recipes to events and festivals. Through Tatak Kanto, they continue their mission to share not just food but a true sense of home, heritage, and heart in everything they create.
